Burundi
Burundi has a population of over 11.9 million, of which an estimated 910,000 have vision loss, 17,000 of whom are blind (2020).
Led by our implementing partner, Dr. Levi Kandeke, the Burundian eye care program is one of the most innovative on the continent.
With our assistance, Dr.Kandeke introduced significant changes to Burundi’s eye health program. He opened a private surgical centre, the Child Eye Health Tertiary Facility (CTSOE) in Bujumbura, the country’s capital.
We support a pediatric eye health program including a network of Community Eye Centres (CECs) linked to CTSOE to provide care for children with vision loss. Children identified at CECs or outreach programs are sent to Bujumbura for diagnosis, surgery, and initial follow-up.
Additional follow-up occurs at the closest CEC, reducing barriers to care such as loss of income due to absence, transportation, lodging, and meals. This ensures thousands of Burundian children receive critical, high-quality eye care so they can go to school and learn, play with friends, and realize their full potential.
