Celebrating an Eye Care Love Story

In the village of Monorom, Cambodia, Ms. Mao Uon and Mr. Sam Phon raised a large family of 8 children and 16 grandchildren. However, in recent years, their ability to engage in family life and care for their grandkids has been hampered by severe vision problems.

Ms. Uon had been suffering from blurred vision in both eyes for over two years. Despite using eye drops recommended by a local medicine shop, her sight remained unclear, making household tasks challenging. Meanwhile, Mr. Phon had been coping with both blurred sight and an uncomfortable tissue growth in his eye even longer. His poor vision eventually forced him to stop farming, leaving the couple reliant on their family for almost everything.

February 5th, 2024, was a turning point in their lives. Their village leader announced an upcoming eye screening visit from a Seva Community Field Worker. During the screening, both Ms. Uon and Mr. Phon were diagnosed with cataracts, while Mr. Phon was also found to have pterygium, a growth of the conjunctiva onto the cornea of the eye. With guidance and counselling, the couple decided to visit the Seva-sponsored eye hospital for further examination and treatment.

Accompanied by their youngest daughter, the couple met Dr. Touk Barang, an ophthalmologist, who confirmed the diagnoses and scheduled surgeries for that same day. Plans were made to address their remaining vision issues in later procedures.

The morning after their surgeries, their eye patches were removed, and they experienced a joyous moment—they could see clearly again. Both expressed their gratitude: “we are very happy that we can have better vision. We feel as though we have a new life. Now, we can confidently manage household chores, farm, care for our grandchildren, and participate in social and religious events. Our children can focus on earning a living, and our grandchildren can concentrate on their studies.”

Thanks to Seva Canada donors, Ms. Uon and Mr. Phon both have their sight back, dramatically improving their quality-of-life. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact of accessible eye care and the gift of clear vision.
