A Future in Focus

Thuon is a 13-year-old student in grade 7 living in a rural village in Mongkol Borey, Cambodia. For the past two years she had difficulty seeing clearly which made it hard for her to read, write and participate in class. Thuon and her parents worried that her poor vision was negatively affecting her grades and her self-esteem as she began falling behind her classmates.

One day at school her teacher told her that Seva was going to be training teachers on primary eye care so they could perform visual acuity tests on their students. Thuon was tested by her teacher shortly after and was found to have poor vision and was scheduled for a follow-up exam by the nurse.

When the refraction nurse came and examined Thuon she diagnosed her with farsightedness and prescribed a pair of glasses.

Thanks to the generosity of Seva Canada donors, the nurse returned to Thuon’s school with her glasses free of charge. “I am very happy because I can see clearly and it feels easy to read and write with my new glasses. Thank you very much Seva Canada for providing me with glasses. I am confident that I will improve and do better in my studies!” – Thuon
