Here's a nice follow-up to the Seva blog post on school charity projects and youth philanthropy. vision testing of children in Guatema Seva

Children in Guatemala get their vision tested as part of the "Little Windows of Light" program

The Grade K-3 classes at St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Kelowna, BC had a Love 4 Lent campaign in the classrooms where each week, the children choose to participate in the Lenten sacrifice for that week. The kids gave up an non-processed food item in their lunch, dessert at a restaurant meal, etc. and then brought that corresponding amount of money in to the Love 4 Lent box. Each week, the school had a theme  for their charity giving -- education, health, sustainability and basic needs,  each with three charities that would receive donations. Louise, one of the parent leaders of the initiative said, "I am hoping that we have educated the kids and parents about the wonderful work of 12 Canadian charities they may not know about, and have helped them teach their kids about charitable giving and the social justice aspect of their Catholic faith, if only a little bit!" Thank you Louise and all the children for giving the gift of sight to a child in Guatemala. It will make a huge difference in the child's life and in the life of his or her family. A recent Globe and Mail article called  "Kid Philanthropy" spoke about the growing trend of youth and school philanthropy. Here at Seva we are very grateful to our young supporters whose enthusiasm and compassion are inspiring.
